I attended North Shore Academy as a kid, a private Jewish school on Chicago’s North Side. It was the first time I truly felt different because of how I looked. Being Black was the obvious reason, but it went deeper than race. Those kids lived with a kind of freedom I didn’t understand. They weren’t surviving. They were just living, unrestricted and unburdened. I used to wonder what it would be like to exist in that kind of ease. What if I could strip parts of myself away? Would life feel lighter? This painting is my way of exploring that question.
