While standing in a plaza in Spain, I looked up at a sky covered in an orange haze. The clouds absorbed the color from the sun, a stark contrast to skies in war-stricken countries, where bombs fly like birds exploding and bring destruction to everything in their path. As an American, it can feel like we are far removed from that kind of violence, until we travel and realize the bubble we live in does not follow us. At the time, the war between Israel and Palestine had intensified again, and what looked like a simple sunset in my world suddenly felt heavier outside the safe confines of home.
